  • HCMS Parents and Families,

North Carolina legislation mandates that public schools schedule 185 days or 1025 hours of instruction each year.  For the 2021-22 school year, Hertford County Public Schools (HCPS) follow the hours of instruction guidelines.  Each year, additional hours of instruction are built into the calendar for weather-related delays or other school closures.  If Hertford County were to experience any additional loss of instructional hours between now and the end of the school year, we would not be able to meet the state-mandated hours of instruction.  On Monday, April 25, the Hertford County Board of Education approved a recommendation that all Hertford County schools, who follow the traditional calendar, add an additional 15 minutes to each school day, beginning May 2 through May 13.  This is a proactive step that will provide 2.5 additional hours to be prepared for any unexpected delays and allow HCPS to meet the mandated hours of instruction.

Current calendar legislation is very restrictive with regard to a district's ability to develop a school calendar that would meet the academic needs of our families, students, and the community.  We encourage parents and community members to become familiar with public education calendar legislation and if you feel that changes would be beneficial, please discuss with our state legislators.

Hertford County Middle School will implement the additional 15 minutes May 2–May 13 as follows:

    • The school day will begin at 7:40 a.m., instead of 7:45 a.m.
    • The school day will end at 3:10 p.m., instead of 3:00 p.m.
    • Students will dismiss for the day at 3:10 p.m.

During the incorporation of the additional 15 minutes each day, teachers will continue providing instruction and preparing students for the end-of-year assessments. Additionally, in an effort to prevent students from losing important instructional time during the remainder of the school year, we encourage you to allow students to remain at school for the entire school day.

Please feel free to contact the school at 252-398-4091 with questions and/or concerns.  Thank you for your continued support.
