FAQ?

Below are the most common questions regarding the HCPS AIG Program.

1.  Who can refer a student for AIG Testing?  Parent, teacher, administrator, staff, or the student him/herself.

2. How do you refer a student?  There is an AIG Lead teacher in each school.  You would need to speak with him/her to get the necessary paperwork to begin the process.  The teachers are:

  • BPS:  Mrs. Regina Ruffin
  • AES:  Mrs. Corese Bowser
  • RES:  Ms. Winborne
  • 8th Grade:  Mrs. Fennell 
  • HCHS:  Ms. Davis and Mrs. F. Smith
  • CSB:  Mrs. Lequin
  • HCEC: Mrs. Ward-Moore 
  • CTE: Ms. B. Reeder

 

3.  What criteria is used to determine if the student is eligible to receive AIG services? 

  • Nationally normed test: At least one of the three MUST be a test score from any of the following
    • ​​​​​​​90 percentile score or higher on a state or national achievement test (EOC, EOG, etc.) The percentile is not the same as the exam grade.
    • 90 percentile score or higher on a nationally norm-referenced aptitude test (NNAT3, CogAT, etc.)
    • 90 percent average or higher overall from the previous quarter.
  • Initial Screening Instrument for Gifted Programming rating of 3 points or more. This form must be completed by a classroom teacher.
  • Portfolio submission of work which consistently demonstrates thinking and skills above grade level. It is the student's responsibility, along with guidance from his/her teachers and families, to select the work that goes in this portfolio. Three to five entries are recommended.

 

4. What are the identification areas?  

Intellectually Gifted (IG) - Students who:

  • Demonstrate ability significantly higher than his/her same age peers as denoted by a score within the 90th percentile or higher on an aptitude test
  • Have not yet demonstrated high academic performance
  • Require activities to stimulate their ability as well as content support

Academically Gifted (AG) - Students who:

  • Perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment in reading and math when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment
  • Score within the 90th percentile or higher on both math and reading EOG/EOC

Academically Gifted in Math (AM) - Students who:

  • Demonstrate outstanding performance in mathematics over the course of the academic year
  • Score within the 90th percentile or higher on the math EOG or Math 1 EOC
  • Require differentiated learning opportunities beyond the basic standard course of study
    • subject acceleration
    • curriculum compacting
    • clustering in regular education classrooms
    • Examples include, but are not limited to:

Academically Gifted in Reading (AR) - Students who:

  • Demonstrate outstanding performance in reading over the course of the academic year
  • Score within the 90th percentile or higher on the reading EOG or English II EOC
    • subject acceleration
    • curriculum compacting
    • clustering in regular education classrooms.
    • Examples include, but are not limited to:

Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AI) - Students who :

  • Score within the 90th percentile or higher on an ability test (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test)
  • Score within the 90th percentile or higher on the reading and math EOG/EOC

 

5.  What happens once my child is identified as AIG?

HCPS will make every effort to place your child with an AIG certified teacher and in a classroom with peers of the same identification.  Your child may receive differentiated instruction, resource classes as applicable (K-5), computer-based instruction (K-5), invitations to competitions, special events/club opportunities, Honors/Advanced Placement/Dual Enrollment (9-12), field trips, hands-on activities and much more. 

6.  How often can a student be tested?

Each student can be tested once a school year using the NNAT3 aptitude test.  We also look at EOG/EOC scores for eligibility as well.
