Information for Private School, Non-Public School Placement

Privately Placed Students

Identifying and Placing Non-Public School Children

Students can be referred to the Exceptional Children's Department of Hertford County Public School for possible identification and replacement, even if they do not attend HCPS. ย ย

Parents, doctors, and members of the childcare programs may refer children as young as age three if they suspect the child has a disability and lives in Hertford County. ย If the referral is accepted, our IEP team will evaluate the child for one of the 14 areas of disability as identified by IDEA. ย From the date the written referral is received to the determination and, if appropriate, the start of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) will not exceed 90 days. ย

HCPS will support IEPs for privately placed students (charter and private schools and homeschooled students) through our Speech-Language program. ย  Students will be given the opportunity to enroll in HCPS to receive the full range of his/her disabilities.

For more information, call Administrative Assistant Denise Trotter with HCPS' Exceptional Children's Program at (252) 358-1761 or email at dtrotter@hertford.k12.nc.us. ย
