Support for Military-Connected Students and Families

Hertford County Public Schools recognizes that military-connected students benefit from understanding and supportive administrators, staff, and teachers. HCPS is committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for all families, including those connected to the military.

Military-connected students may experience unique challenges related to military life, such as frequent school transitions, family separations due to deployments, and differences in academic standards and graduation requirements across states. HCPS works to support these students by promoting consistency, flexibility, and awareness across our schools.

HCPS collaborates with community partners and follows state and federal guidance to support military-connected families during transitions. This includes adherence to the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children, which helps minimize educational disruptions related to enrollment, placement, attendance, eligibility, and graduation.

Families who are relocating to or from Hertford County are encouraged to take advantage of available resources, including:

  • Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Families - Offers guidance on key transition issues such as enrollment, course placement, attendance flexibility, and graduation requirements.

  • Military OneSource - A comprehensive resource connecting military families to educational, counseling, relocation, and quality-of-life supports.

  • Tutor.com for Military Families - Free online tutoring and academic support available to eligible military-connected students.

  • Zero to Three is a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting the healthy development of babies and toddlers by equipping families, professionals, and policymakers with research-based guidance and resources. 

  • National Child Traumatic Stress Network was established to improve access to care, treatment, and services for traumatized children and adolescents exposed to traumatic events.

  • CFNC - College Foundation of NC is a free statewide service that helps students plan, apply, and pay for college through a partnership of North Carolina education agencies.

  • Sesame Street Talk, Listen, Connect for military families helps children and families cope with deployments, injuries, and loss. The program uses simple videos, storybooks, and activities to help families talk, listen, and get through tough changes together.  

 

Guidance for Military Families with Exceptional Children - Resources to help families understand special education processes and protections during school transitions.

  • Autism Society of NC (ASNC) supports individuals and families affected by autism across the state through advocacy, education, training, and direct services.

  • STOMP - Specialized Training of Military Parents helps military families with children who have special education or health needs by providing parent-to-parent training and support from experienced military parents.

  • EFMP - Exceptional Family Member Program supports military families with special medical or educational needs by helping identify services, coordinate assignments, and connect families to supports and resources.
