The HCHS English Department provides a four-year sequence that encourages students to read fluently, think critically, and express themselves effectively. Throughout this sequence, students explore classical and contemporary works in World Literature, American Literature, and British Literature. The overall curriculum is based on the Common Core standards that emphasize reading literature, reading informational texts, writing, speaking & listening, and language.

At HCHS, the English Department consists of five teachers who create innovative and engaging lessons that allow students to read, write, speak, and listen daily.

My name is Yasheka Hastings-Bacchas. I am a Jamaican and a graduate of Northern Caribbean University. I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English Language and a minor in Guidance and Counseling. 

This school year will be my 8th year as an educator. I am excited about beginning my second year at Hertford County High School teaching English I. 

The philosophy that guides me most as an educator is “True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, mental, social, and spiritual being.” Ellen G. White

As an educator, I strongly believe in holistic development. It is my hope that each child that I come in contact with will learn lifelong lessons rather than just a mere syllabus. I believe that my classroom should be a safe haven for every child where they feel comfortable to express themselves and develop their emotional intelligence and various ways of expressing one’s self.
