DESIGNING THE FUTURE - Art

Kindergarten- These delightful young students are learning to come into class quietly, take their seats and wait for directions. The students are very enthusiastic about all their projects. They are learning to draw firemen, witches, cats, Santa and much more from basic shapes. Also, cutting and holding scissors correctly is a fine motor skill the students are learning day to day. Art vocabulary words are entered into the student’s lessons everyday so they will learn artistic jargon. Learning to have their own hands is a big accomplishment for them so far.
First Grade- First graders were refreshed with last year’s achievements. Coloring neatly without “train wrecks” is encouraged. They are also learning that cutting on the lines and using small amounts of glue is best. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines are used in games like “I SPY”. Our first graders have also learned some of our nation’s history in their projects. This was best displayed just last month in November, when we discussed Pilgrims and Indians and what importance they played in the Thanksgiving holiday.
Second Grade- These classes have learned to take new art terms as well as previous years terms and “overlap” and show “transparency” in their art projects. Lastly, they are folding and cutting shapes to learn symmetry in projects.
Third Grade- Third graders are learning correct cursive writing to try to get into our new “Cursive Writing Club”- this requires that the students be able to write correctly their first and last names, as well as the entire alphabet in upper and lower case letters. The “Cursive Writing Club” really helps promote a sense of self-empowerment in our third graders and they take pride in this accomplishment.
