Coach Simmons of Hertford County High School

Coach Charles Simmons received the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 2018 Region 1 Special Person Award on September 26, 2018 at the Region 1 Meeting at the Heart Center at ECU Vidant.  The award reads:  


NCHSAA salutes you for great service to the organization. Your effort and dedication have contributed to maintaining a wholesome athletic environment.


Coach Simmons has taught and coached for 37 years in HCPS and has been the Athletic Director for 27 years.  As the Head Coach of the Varsity Men’s Basketball team he has earned a career record of 620 wins and 283 losses, including 16 conference and 4 district championships.  He has served on the NC Athletic Directors Board of Directors (1995-1999), the NC Coaches Association Board of Directors (2003-2007); was the past president of the NC Coaches Association in 2009 and Past President in 2010.  In 2013, Coach Simmons was awarded the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Davis Harris AD of the Year and the 2013 NCADA State AD of the Year.   Coach Simmons is a graduate of Pembroke State University and East Rutherford High School where he is a member of the Hall of Fame.
